  4. Wallet - F2013.1.1

    Early Long Island leather billfold, gilt embossed with the writing "Jacob Townsend" and "Oyster Bay 1743". Two half-moon flaps create a total of four pockets for the wallet. On one flap, in ink is written "Jacob Townsend 1746". The wallet has scroll and foliage style embossed trim. Inside the wallet is a small scrap of paper. On one side reads: "John Townsond 1681" and the other side there is illegible writing and "Jericho Ny".

    Canvaswork pocketbook with worked name and date, "Samuel Townsend EST 1755". Accordion compartmented wallet. The wallet probably was made by his wife. Worked or needlework wallets, or pocketbooks, were fashionable between 1740 and 1790 and used by both men and women.
