Description |
Canvaswork pocketbook with worked name and date, "Samuel Townsend EST 1755". Accordion compartmented wallet. The wallet probably was made by his wife. Worked or needlework wallets, or pocketbooks, were fashionable between 1740 and 1790 and used by both men and women. The vertical stitch used here in a zigzag pattern is popularly known today as bargello, flamestitch, or Florentine, but in 18th- century America it was called the Irish stitch.
