Portrait of Solomon Townsend. Prior to the American Revolution, Solomon Townsend (1746-1811), eldest son of Samuel Townsend and brother of Robert, was a merchant ship's captain making many successful transatlantic voyages. During the last years of the war, he went into the iron business with his cousin Peter Townsend. Located in Orange County, New York, the Sterling Ironworks manufactured the defensive "Great Chain" that spanned the Hudson River at West Point. After the war, he established the Augusta Forge nearby, as well as an anchor shop in New York City. This portrait was painted in 1808, when Solomon was a member of the New York State Assembly. He passed away three years later at the age of 65. His son, also named Solomon, moved to Raynham Hall in 1850s with his family and was responsible for the Victorian remodeling of the Townsend Homestead. |
