Sketch of Dr. Peter Townsend (1795-1849). Signed lightly in pencil near his left shoulder: "....del..." Inscribed on back:"This sketch of me in crayon, taken as I always sat in my study, is by the celebrated American painter Vanderlyn who was also about 1826, had previously taken my half portrait in oil colors an admirable likeness then & now (at) my sister Phebes. No. 170 East Broadway, NY. This in crayon was taken while I was a member of the Common Council of New York City & while I was residing at the venerable Signore Lorenzo Daporti's Broadway near Leonard Street. I think it was about the year 1830 previous to my leaving for the West Indies Havana May 1830- most probably for the winter of 1829-30 PS Townsend New York July 10, 1845." |
