Description |
Rosetto’s rendition of Raynham Hall depicts the 1851 additions of a tower, porte-cochère, and millstone by slightly skewing the perspective and using a generalized lighting scheme devoid of shadow to highlight the newer architectural features. The surrounding trees emphasize the verticality of the water tower while reinforcing the elegant approachability of the house. Though there are no figures in the painting, the manicured gardens, brightly painted shutters, and sign attached to a nearby tree all point to the house as being active and tended with care. Rossetto, an artist and teacher, lived in Oyster Bay and taught at Oyster Bay High School around 1937. Her work was featured in the 1948 Whitney Annual Exhibition (now Biennial) alongside work by Louise Bourgeois, Willem DeKooning, and Edward Hopper.
