Description |
An early-mid 18th century cherry and tulip poplar highboy, an original Townsend family piece, deeply dash molded cornice over five, long, graduated drawers, the lower section with deep medial molding over one long drawer, over three short drawers, deeply scalloped skirt, centered by turned finial, beautiful, cyma-curved legs, each with beaded-edge and curved-line detail on knee, ending in gracefully pointed foot; seems to retain its original brasses. Note: by tradition, it has been stated in print that the legs were removable for transportation. They appear to have been in place for many years. However, the absence of knee returns and the internal construction, different from the usual leg-set construction, of other highboys, seem to indicate that the legs could have indeed been removable. It is believed that this feature was possibly used for easier transportation of the piece when made. |
