From Maurice to his father, an account of his trip New York City- 37th St. to Oyster Bay by boat; description of a yacht race; others mentioned: Tim and Uncle Ed. Oyster Bay Thursday, June 23rd 1871 11.45 P.M. Dear Father, I reached here safely at 11.15 P.M. having been delayed by the boat, on account of the Yacht race 4 hours and a half the boat left thirty seventh street at twenty five minutes past eight the particulars of the yacht I need not write for you will have them by the sun newspaper tomorrow morning. The sail up the sound and the east river was very grand and delighful to a person who has not had the opportunity before. Although the passengers were rather sleepy and hungry and the crew rather crossy rorsy still it was very pleasant. I found Tim and the little team at the dock and I rode home very pleasantly and comfortably on reaching the house I found Uncle Ed there who intended to stay overnight had nobody come- from the city but I told him I thought that I was sufficient guard so he returned to his house. I have not been able to obtain much news on account of the shortness of the time of arriving and writing. I remain Your affectionate son M. E. Townsend (Note of back: Son Maurice, 23 June 1871) |
