From Solomon S. Townsend (1850-1910) to his father who was at Albany attending the Constitutional Convention; he relates events and happenings at Oyster Bay, especially noting last school meeting. Evening Oyster Bay Sept 11th 1867 My Dear Father We have not had any letter from you as yet today. Charley has just gone to the Post office, and I suppose He will bring a letter from you. We have had quite a cold day today. the coolest of the season I think if it had been still last night without any wind we might possibly have had a light frost. I think that although it is quite cool tonight it is not cold enough to have a frost. Hawthorne & Paddy have been digging Potatoes today and Jim with the Big Horses has been on the Road near Hewlets Mill Pond. I am in hopes that todays work will keep Brower quiet for a while. We are diging the Jackson White potatoes which promise a fair yield. I am afraid that the Dykemans will not turn out as well. I sent the four barrels of apples to New York this morning, that I wrote you about in my last nights letter. Charley has just come in with a letter addressed to Sol. S. & Ed Townsend. He was somewhat puzzled to know as to who should open it. In reading the letter I see that you say that we did not write you the results of the school meeting. I thought that Charley had written you or I should have done it in my last letter. I think that they decided not to have a new site, that is they decided according to Cousin James idea. there were quite a number present. Mr. Adam in the Chair Brower & Line Baylis the canvasers on the opposite side did not like it any too much. Mr. John Sammis came and asked me this morning where you were staying at Albany. I told him and he said that it was his intention to be there friday evening, and that he would call & see you With love to all Yours very truly Solomon S. Townsend |
