Edward N. Townsend (1858-1914) to his father Solomon about haying in Oyster Bay and a yachting excursion aboard the Sea Drift "for fish". Between Edward and his brother Bob they caught 29 fish. Lines on paper may be printed or may have been drawn on as guidelines for writing. Oyster Bay July 28th 1871 Dear Father Mama wanted me to write to you so I took the opportunity of writing to night. The harvest weather has been very poor this week. They have finished cutting the lot near the woods and have got two loads home and about 9 loads in cocks also three laying loose Chas says they will finish that lot to morrow if clear. It is now raining the rain commenced at about 7.45 P.M. The yacht sea drift conveyed her crew Gus Bob and myself to Sheep-Head rock on a cruise for fish. We anchored and cast out lines and when we weighed anchor after fishing for about 3 hours Bob and myself together we had caught twenty nine. We brought them home and put them on ice, and had them for tea, they tasted very good Alls Well I Remain your Affectionate son E. N. Townsend (note on back Edward Nicoll Townsend 28 July 1871) |
