From Charles D. to his father (at 124 Pearl Street) relating drainage problems in the swamp; Tim hoeing potatoes; Mrs. James C. Townsend's visit and requests; mother is going to New York City and has hired a servant; Eddie's "poison" continues. Addressed to Hon. S. Townsend, 124 Pearl St. Embossed building at upper right of first page (probably the Congress Paper Co. mark). Oyster Bay July 5th 71. Dear Father Tim and myself went to the Swamp this morning and pushed the rattan down from Hawwardk's to the receiving Spring, but we could not pass the pipe that comes from Jim cellar (the drain) Tim thinks that the difficulty lies about that neighborhood, so tomorrow we intend digging it up and see what is the trouble. Tim has been over Mill hill since 11 to day howing potatoes. Jim working in the garden, and helping build fence in pound lot. Mrs. Jas. C Townsend called this afternoon and asked if you and mother were in She said that She would like to see you to borrow Dr. Peters book about the Townsend in reference to some relative who wrote to her from Baltimore. She say's that you borrowed from cousin James a number of back numbers of the Record, She wishes you could sent them back to her for reference. Mother goes to New York tomorrow (Thursday) with currants and cherrys for Sweet meats I X(I think that her intention is to return home by Boat in the)X A Green Horn waiter girl was sent here this afternoon by Ellen Powell, Mother hired her to come a week on trial commencing Friday at the rate $9 per month. Judging from the price and the voice of the domestique I should'nt think that she amount too much, but time will make know her qualities. Eddies poison still continues but I t!hink that it has about reached it's climax. Excuse writing the paper is very thin, and near I pen. Yours Respl: C.D. Townsend To Hon S. Townsend 124 Pearl Str.
