Robert Townsend writes to his nephew, Solomon Townsend, at 41 Peck Slip in New York City, saying that Solomon might soon be able to obtain the services of James Gaul's boy. Note: The child James Gaul has is about 15 years old, which places his birth year around 1818. The March 31, 1817 law for gradual emancipation states that "all children of either sex born to an enslaved mother after March 31, 1817, and July 4, 1827, were to be freed after the age of 21. All enslaved born before July 4, 1799 would be freed on July 4, 1827." If he was about 15, then Robert and Solomon II were still looking to use enslaved labor. |
