From Robert (1853-1915) to his father; tells of his arrival at Oyster Bay by steamboat; planting of potatoes and the vineyard; tells of an oyster boat in the harbor which was loaded with bricks and how it nearly sank. Oyster Bay Apr. 28th 1871 8½ Pm Dear Father I arrived here safely at twenty minutes of 7 O'Clock a head of the general time. Tim tells me he has commenced to plant the potatoes over "Mill Hill" in the "Vineyard" - He was at the boat with the Little horses and the Rockaway John Foster, Mr. Foster's son rode up from the boat with me and took Dinner. I received the $5 and the Letters, which you left for me. I am agoing to make a copy of your letter to Mr. Bayles and then hand it to him as you desired - The country is looking very finely. the place looks very snug. Johny Foster exclaimed as we entered it "How Pretty it is! although the sky was very much overcast and threatened rain. We will get at the Grapevines early in the morning. It is very comfortable in the House P.S. As we neared the steamboat dock to night we saw an oyster Boat. pretty well loaded with Bricks - and in a sinking condition three row boats were towing her into the Shore and two men bailing her out. it produced a little excitement. -- Mr. Edwd Townsend, moves up to tomorrow noon -- his daughter and son came up on the boat, Please excuse the paper and the writing With love to all Your Affect.Son Robert Townsend Apr 28th 1871 9 PM Thermometer 50° above Zero, Cloudy (Note at bottom of letter: Robt Townsend, 28 Apr 1871) |
